Catherine Addai (Founder)
Behind The Brand
In 2013, while on maternity leave with her daughter Makaela, Ghanaian-Canadian Catherine Addai transformed her passion for fashion into reality by founding Kaela Kay. With no formal design training, Catherine taught herself to sew using a book and YouTube tutorials, creating her first dress from Ankara fabric. The positive response to her designs led her to establish a brand that celebrates African heritage through modern, feminine styles.
Kaela Kay's collections feature vibrant African prints in classic silhouettes, catering to women of all sizes, with offerings up to size 22 and custom designs available. The brand emphasises local production, with garments crafted in Toronto by a team of dedicated seamstresses, ensuring quality and supporting the local economy.
Since opening her first boutique in 2019, Catherine has expanded Kaela Kay's presence, with her designs worn by celebrities like Tracy Moore and Busy Philipps. The brand's commitment to inclusivity, cultural representation, and empowering women has earned it recognition and a loyal customer base.
